Pauline Virginia Schnur

Obituary

Pauline “Polly” Virginia (Slayton) Schnur, 97, of Staunton, Virginia, peacefully passed away on October 3, 2022, at the residence she shared with her husband, Charlie, in The Legacy at North Augusta.  Mrs. Schnur was born July 16, 1925, in Pulaski, Virginia, the daughter of the late Herman and Ruth Ragland Slayton. Her father died while she was an infant, and her mother married Carl C. Tharp a few years later. Polly always referred to Carl as her “Daddy.” After moving around the country for Charlie’s job with A.T. & T., and when her children were raised and out on their own, Mrs. Schnur enjoyed working for Rich’s Department Store in Atlanta, Georgia, and Frito-Lay, also in Atlanta. When Charlie retired, Polly also retired so they could travel and visit with family, who were becoming increasingly scattered around the country. Polly was a skilled seamstress. But her passion was shopping. Among her friends, she had a reputation for being the best comparison shopper around, which required time and travel before the internet was available.  Even in her later years, while using a walker, Polly was always ready to shop. Her family fondly called her the “Go Go Girl.”Mrs. Schnur was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She is survived by her loving husband, Charlie, of 76 years; a son, Gary Schnur and his wife Linda of Leander, Texas; one daughter, Shirley Travis and her husband Jim McAuley of Churchville; two grandchildren, Paula Tacker and her husband Clint and Katie King and her husband Greg; three great-grandchildren, Josey Tacker, Kammy Hebert, and Kaden King; and her sister, Patricia Tharp Fitzgerald of Staunton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, October 7, 2022, at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Staunton, with Father Matthias Lusembo presiding. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. The family is deeply grateful to the staff of Legacy Hospice and The Legacy at North Augusta for their caring and compassionate care of Polly and her entire family. Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton, handles her arrangements.
