an engineering problem, was rushed to completion this morning by a crew of Thomas Lumber men. At the time this picture was taken, carpenters were still at work. The ramp was designed to give the gravity-powered racers a flying start. Pushing was not allowed. |

Three ambitious Soap Box Derby entrants wheel their bucking “mounts” down Concord’s rough brick paving in a trial heat held yesterday. Car in the center is plyboard and tin, boat-shaped entry of Calvin Collins, Umatilla, which set a joint course record of 25 seconds with Bobby Phillips, Orlando. Car at extreme right is not finished. |
Car at left with curious driver, who is watching his rivals instead of the road, needs only paint to get it ready for the “big race” on Aug. 3. For the race, a wooden 12-foot ramp will be constructed at head of hill to give drivers a faster start. | |||
