Ralph J. Schnur’s

Soapbox Derby Adventure

Follow the Journey from Orlando to Akron Ohio

In 1934, Ralph J. Schnur entered  the first local soap box derby in Orlando Florida.  The pages that follow trace the events of this 15 year old through these adventures, based on newspaper articles found and provided by my Uncle Charles Schnur. I found it quite enlightening to see this side of my father.  In some of his statements made throughout the various article, they seem to come directly out of the character Opie in the old TV show, Andy Griffith of Mayberry

One thing that I retained is the trueness of the article as they were printed at the time.  There are many misspelled word, and as today, the Last name has been massacred.  There were no spell checkers back then, and they paid some copyboy $0.10 per hour to proof the copy.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did, and I have included PDF copies of the articles for those who may want a copy.

Again, Thanks a bunch Uncle Charlie for the paper files and pictures…
